What Scouts has Done For Me

Alex VanCampenhout, Webelos 2

Scouting has made me aware of more stuff. Like always be prepared because what if you're camping and it rains? You should always pack at least a rain coat. Scouting has also made me more helpful for if it's moving stuff or if helping friends. Scouting isn’t only working for badges, it’s also fun when you go camping because you get to swim, play games and have fun! Scouting is also serious about first aid, choking-anything like that.

Leadership

Ken Walerius – Assistant Cubmaster

I first became involved with Cub Scouts 6 years ago when my oldest son joined Pack 338. At the orientation meeting, the Cubmaster, Tim Fakler had a 20 ft long roll of cash register paper extended across the front of the room. He asked the parents a series of questions. His first question was how long do you expect your child to live? Most of us said 100 years. He said this 20 ft piece of paper represents 100 years of your child’s life. He asked us when will your child get married? We all gave a safe answer, we said 50. He tore the paper in half. When will your child start to drive? We said 16, he tore off 2/3 more. Then he asked the most important question of all. When will your child stop listening to you? Most of us said 11 or 12. He tore off some more. Cub Scouts begins at age 6 so that part is history. Now he is holding a piece of paper 1 ft long. He said this represents the 5 years you have left to influence your child in a positive way and teach him the values that must last the rest of his life. This is a very powerful example of the best definition of Leadership …which is INFLUENCE…… pure and simple influence. That’s the easy part, the hard part is knowing the appropriate actions to achieve this influence. Cub Scouts has a 5 year program of action that is proven to be successful. As parents, whether we like it or not, we will be leaders of our children for the rest of our lives. Our influence will continue to guide them even after we are gone. Parenting, leadership and influence go hand in hand. By wanting to learn how to be the best parent you can be, you are also learning how to be the best leader you can be. Your child, your child’s friends and his fellow scouts will appreciate your efforts and will most definitely thank you ………..…… ...….in about 20 or 30 years.

Roundtables

Ken Walerius – Assistant Cubmaster

“Roundtables" are what Scouting calls the monthly program enrichment meetings held in each district. Their purpose is to provide information to help leaders do the most effective job possible for their unit's members.

Between the presentations and the informal interaction with other leaders, ideas and solutions are shared that can be put to immediate use in upcoming meetings.

All packs and troops have their own "mailbox," which contains relevant information including upcoming events, activities, training courses camps, program offerings and unit administration information. And the cost – free! Dan Patch District Roundtables are held the first Thursday of every month from 7:30 – 9 PM at LDS Chapel, 651 E. Southcross Drive, Burnsville.
