Scouting at St. John the Baptist is a great experience for
the boys and their parents/sponsors. There are many activities throughout the year(s) that nurture the
bonds between the cub scouter and their sponsor. These experiences culminate over a cub scouts "career"
to build good chracter and self esteem. It all starts with the motto "SEARCH-DISCOVER-SHARE" that tiger
cubs all learn.
A cub scout starts out in 1st grade as a Tiger Cub where a group of
boys is formed and called a Den and the Den is assigned a den
number. This is the center of the cub scout activity
group. There are several Dens that together form a Cub scout
Pack!! Cub scouts are encouraged to create their own den cheer such
as " WERE DEN 1 WERE DEN 1--WE LOVE TO PLAY AND HAVE S OF FUN" and
bellow it out loudly when ever they get the chance!
There are various activities which help aid development of fine motor
skills, safety awareness, community service, and build strong
positive character. Awards, patches, and pins are given out to each
boy earns it through activity and participation as they progress
through the ranks to build self esteem and character development.
After their first year, the boys progress in rank annually to
Wolf scout, Bear scout, Webelos I, and Webelos II. The program
is well established -- not a lot of "reinventing the wheel" but
plenty of room for creativity. All this happens with the guidance of
the parents, sponsors, and the cub scout adult leaders. Its all
volunteer.
The program culminates with the transition from Webelos II to Boy
Scouts. In Boy Scouts, the boys run their program themselves
with guidance from the adult leaders. With this new
independence the boys develop further leadership skills and make new
friends. Camps are of longer duration during the summer and the
boys can participate in "high adventure camps." The sky is the
limit!
Scout leaders are required to submit an application, and provided
training starting with "Youth Protection", and "Basic Leader
Essentials". From there the leaders have "Leader Specific
Training" concurrent with their dens advancement. Being a
den leader, cub master, or committee member is extremely rewarding
and fun. You work with other adults and help boys progress in
rank and mature into young men--all while having fun by learning the
things in their rank hand books.
Please Join our pack and come and have some fun!! You'll love
it!
